Braves Bolster Bullpen With Swap

Making their first deals of the Trade Deadline crunch period, the Dodgers and Braves swapped utility men, with the Braves also adding righty reliever Danys Baez.

Betemit fills one of the Dodgers’ major holes at third-base, and he brings a potent bat to the recently quiet LA lineup. Expect .280 with 10HR and 35RBI from Betemit for the Dodgers the rest of the season.

Danys Baez fills a crucial need in the Braves bullpen, becoming the set-up man for recently acquired closer Bob Wickman.  The bullpen has been the Braves’ most glaring weakness this season, and Baez upgrades the relief corps in a big way.

Willy Aybar is a solid, young utility player, who has a decent glove, and a good eye at the plate.  He’ll spell Chipper Jones and Edgar Renteria, and will provide Bobby Cox with a decent bat off the bench.

Bottom Line: Both teams filled glaring needs with this trade, improving their chances at reaching the postseason.  Neither team is the clear winner in this trade, but it’s a win-win deal.

  1. This is a classic Braves trade. They picked up a great young arm and a utility player that will fill in behind their starting infield. All this for a good (not great) infielder who has neverr really fullfilled his promise. Schuerholtz strikes again!
